Experiencing an April Verch show is like hopping a supersonic freight train in an old lumber camp in northern Ontario and trekking across the prairie, through the Appalachians, down the Mississippi to the Louisiana bayou, all the way to Brazil, France, and the Scottish Highlands and back, with stops at Carnegie Hall and church along the way. Verch launched her professional career by winning the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion and the Canadian Open Fiddle Champion titles, but she’s not only a world-class fiddler; she’s a world-class dancer and a singer whose voice has been hailed as “absolutely captivating” by the Toronto Star. With five albums to her credit by her mid-20s, Verch is steeped in the fiddling and step-dancing traditions of her native northeastern Ontario with its vibrant mixture of Anglo, French, and Celtic roots. She has drawn comparisons to Natalie MacMaster and Mark O’Connor, but her performances exude charm, humor, and energy that are all her own.
