Parkland College Permanent Collection Reception: Thursday, July 10, 6‑8 p.m., Gallery Lounge Gallery Talk by retired art professor John Ekstrom: 7 p.m. Music by Jordan Kaye Trio Enjoy a wide range of oil, watercolor, and acrylic paintings from the Parkland College Permanent Collection, on display at the Parkland Art Gallery from Monday, June 30 to Thursday, July 31. A free exhibit reception on Thursday, July 10 will feature a talk by retired art professor John Ekstrom at 7 p.m. and musical performances from Jordan Kaye and Friends. Parkland Art Gallery summer hours are Monday–Thursday, 10–3 p.m. and 6–8 pm. Parkland’s multi‑faceted Permanent Collection includes works donated to the college through the Parkland Foundation; works obtained through its Fine and Applied Arts student purchase awards; and pieces obtained through the Illinois Art‑In‑Architecture program. Professor Ekstrom will speak about his work in this exhibit, an oil painting entitled “Downtown” which was part of the Art‑in‑Architecture program. The state‑funded program was created in 1977 to collect the works of Illinois artists for display in public buildings. “Downtown” depicts a lively section of Champaign and is on permanent display in the college’s D‑Wing. “This work documents a time and place in our community and is a part of our history,” said Lisa Costello, gallery director. “It is a wonderful example of what this collection is all about.” Other exhibit pieces will include high‑level Parkland student‑generated works and paintings donated through the Foundation. “Many people don’t realize that we have a collection; these artworks are spread throughout the campus,” Costello said. “It’s fascinating to see some of them on exhibit as a group.” Other artists include: Barbara England, Barbara Broderick, Sharon Brooks, Kristin Cain, Wanda Coady, Marsha Daniels, Antonio Gonzalez, Billy Morrow Jackson, Judy Jones, Vicky Kausselke, Don Lake, Joe Grindley, Paula McCarty, Jan Noble, Martha Seif, Scott Kimmit, Chris Starkey, Joan Gassisi, Virginia Rettburg, Birute Simaitis, Cindy Smith, Constance Smith, Milena Tiner, Dennis Lewis, and Louise Woodroofe. Chris Starkey, alumni of Parkland College and currently an instructor in the College For Kids summer program will give a lecture on Wednesday, July 16 at 2 p.m. in the Parkland Art Gallery. This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. Programs at the Parkland Art Gallery are partially supported by Parkland College Student Activities.
