A little after six months of their formation, Ra Ra Riot appeared on New York’s College Music Journal and consequently gained attention from Spin Magazine. Further in their first year of musicianship, the band opened for acts like Tokyo Police Club, Art Brut and Bow Wow Wow.
Next, the band went on to tour Europe and returned home for the release of their self-titled EP, which the promoted in a headlining tour across North America in 2007 appearing in the South by Southwest music festival and Daytrotter sessions. However, after a show in Massachusetts, their original drum player, John Pike, drowned off the town of Hamilton coast.
In 2008, the band continued to grow by signing onto the label, V2 Records, and returned to the South by Southwest music festival. The band also released their debut album, The Rhumb Line, in mid-August. In the fall of 2008, Ra Ra Riot continued to tour in North America and in Europe with Vampire Weekend.
