Seattle, WA trio Nirvana destroyed eighties bombastic rock style in 1991 with the release of their incredibly influential album, "Nevermind." Nirvana's brand of melodic, hard, alternative rock became instantly popular making the band a huge force in the erupting early 90's grunge scene. The band's subsequent releases solidified their reign as the kings of alternative rock. Their de facto leader, songwriter Kurt Cobain, felt deeply torn because of all the media attention his band and his relationships were receiving, moving him toward drug addiction and personal turmoil. In January of 1994 the band played a legendary acoustic set for MTV's Unplugged series. Three month's later Cobain was found dead, having committed suicide. Drummer Dave Grohl went on to form hightly successful modern rock group Foo Fighters while Nirvana's music lives on. They are perhaps more popular now then ever, having recently released a box set and in 2007 releasing the DVD of their Unplugged performance.
