Mates of State formed in Lawrence, Kansas in 1997 when Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel met through mutual friends. Their music mostly consists of their drum set and electric organ, although their vocal harmonies play a large part in their music. The two members of the band married in 2001, a year after releasing their first album, My Solo Project, and have since released three albums, including Bring It Back in 2006. Their disjointed melodies and passionate performances have earned them a firm fan base, and they have toured with bands such as Spoon and Death Cab for Cutie.
