Stylistically integrating hip-hop, funk, and metal, Living Colour was formed as a product of the Black Rock Coalition, an organization created by Vernon Reid for black musicians interested in playing rock music. It took a lot of transitioning and performing in New York City clubs before they released their first CD, "Vivid" under the direction of fan Mick Jagger in 1988. The message-infused CD eventually reached #6 on Billboard Top 200. The tracks "Open Letter to a Landlord" and "Funny Vibe" were the notable tracks. Their next two albums, "Times Up" and "Stain" continued to mix genres but did not get the amount of attention as their previous works. In 1995, the band split due to artistic differences and members pursued their own projects. In 2001, they reunited for a tour and in 2003, they released another experimental album, "Collideøscope."
