Depesche Mode is an electronic pop band from Basildon, England which formed in 1980 and became one of the most popular and influential New Wave bands of their era. The band found immediate success upon releasing their first three singles, all three of them immediately hitting the U.K. charts, the last of which reaching the top ten. The band continued to release material which was relatively popular in the U.K. until 1984 when they broke into the U.S. with their single "People Are People," reaching #13 on the charts and beginning their streak of international success. The band continued on through the 80s into the 90s and 2000s, releasing several more records and having much internal turmoil, with Alan Wilder leaving the band in 1995 and David Gahan developing a heroin addiction, which he checked into rehab in 1996 and eventually recovered from. Their most recent release, Playing The Angel, has received much praise and sparked a massive tour and the release of several remastered tracks and DVDs. There have been talks about the band continuing on, with plans to begin writing a new album in early 2008.
