Composed of Kelvin Mercer, David Jolicoeur and Vincent Mason, De La Soul is a hip hop group based out of Long Island, New York. Best known for their combination of witty lyrics and dance-based grooves, the band reached prominent success with their debut release, 1989's "3 Feet High and Rising" which reached platinum status on the Billboard charts. Active since 1987, the group has been cited as an influence to numerous hip hop artists that are currently reaching their success including Black Eyed Peas and Mos Def. As of late, the group won a Grammy in 2005 for Best Pop Vocal Collaboration for their work on the Gorillaz single, "Feel Good Inc."
