Generally known as the work of Daniel Smith, Danielson is the collaborative effort of Smith and various numbers of people, from his wife, siblings and children to the likes of fellow artist Sufjan Stevens. The band has come to be known for its unique blend of indie pop and gospel sensibilities, showcasing falsetto vocals and expansive musical arrangements. In 1995, the group signed to record label Tooth and Nail (predominantly known for the religious beliefs of most of its artists) and released three full-lengths before ending up under the direction of Secretly Canadian Records. The group's latest release, 2006's "Ships," received rave reviews from prominent magazines such as Pitchfork and Cokemachineglow. In 2007, the life of Daniel Smith and company was profiled in a feature length film, "Danielson: A Family Movie (or, Make A Joyful Noise HERE."
