“The truth is out there”… again. Or so it would seem, because the X-Files: I Want to Believe will be in theaters in a couple of weeks and the staggering amount of buzz that has generated about it is beating down my door with a giant alien probe. The funny thing about all of the internet chatter is that it has very little weight behind it. I remember Iron Man having more buzz and we had more tangible info to go with it but that made us want to see it more. With the new X-Files flick, we don’t know anything except that this movie has Mulder, Scully, Billy Connolly being some crazy cross between Nick Nolte’s mug shot and Ringo Langly from the Lone Gunmen.

As far as I can tell, I Want to Believe will probably be an extended “Creature Feature,” episode complete with insane amounts of denial infused into every conversation by Scully who will go on disbelieving that something is really wrong the whole time until the monster finally appears and almost tears her head off. But that’s what we go to the X-Files for right? To see characters we really care for and empathize with at a monster movie? Isn’t it fun to not have to be praying for the horrible bad guy to dispatch the heroes because they’re so infuriatingly retarded in moments of panic? Sure it is, and that’s why these episodes always worked.

Maybe I’m alone and the only X-Files fan that doesn’t care how Scully’s baby is handling first grade, or whether Skinner went back to being a marginal shadow fighter in the war to rid the world of aliens to Mulder, but I am one of the faithful. Whenever I have a day off and find myself at home at two in the afternoon, I’m watching the X-Files reruns and will watch whatever crap Chris Carter throws together that has that spooky opening theme tied to it. Who else is with me?
