Lekman’s latest release, Night Falls Over Kortedala (2007), stands as a brilliant fusion of Morrissey-esque melancholia and Belle & Sebastian-inspired quirkiness. Hailing from the land of ABBA, and idiosyncratic to a “T,” the Swedish indie-pop star successfully integrates Yorke-style alienating electronica with kitschy, symphonic melodies.

Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks

Prog-rock meets classic Pavement in Stephen Malkmus & the Jick’s newly-released Real Emotional Trash (March 2008). A Portland project gone psychedelic, Malkmus’ lyric eccentricity and guitar mastery coheres well with ex-Sleater-Kinney Janet Weiss’ mad percussive skills, proving that the ex-Pavement front man hasn’t yet lost his groove.
