Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Ford, Spielberg and Lucas are back, and they’re poised to deliver the biggest hit of the summer. This one is going to be huge folks. (May 22)

Sex and the City: The Movie

One of the most culturally significant shows of the past decade finally comes to the big screen after years of behind the scenes drama. Carrie Bradshaw and her posse will have no trouble getting women to flock to the theater. Also, the internet is abuzz with rumors about the top-secret plot of the film, which supposedly contains a major character’s death. (May 30)

The Happening

M. Night Shyamalan offers up his first R-rated feature, with this one tackling an environmental scare rather than aliens, ghosts, or monsters. Hopefully The Happening echoes Signs rather than Shyamalan’s most recent effort, Lady in the Water, which was panned by both critics and audiences. If Shyamalan delivers the goods, he could have another huge hit on his hands. (June 13)

WALL-E

Pixar’s tale of a lonely robot who finds love in the year 2085 is the biggest gamble the studio has ever taken. Why? Because the film is nearly dialogue-free and doesn’t contain talking animals or bright, candy colors. If any studio can pull this off, Pixar can, and early buzz on the film is good. (June 27)

The Dark Knight

Heath Ledger’s final role as an unconventional Joker in Christopher Nolan’s follow-up to Batman Begins is already getting talked about as being the performance of his career. Plus, Christian Bale returns as the caped crusader. Nolan has yet to disappoint audiences, and The Dark Knight seems destined to be another roaring success. (July 18)

Mamma Mia!

Audiences looking for lighter fare the weekend of The Dark Knight can find it in this bright, peppy musical about a girl’s search for her biological father as her wedding quickly approaches. Meryl Streep, who seems hotter than ever at the moment, sings and dances her way through ABBA songs in the film, which will likely capture the same crowd that made Hairspray a huge success last summer. (July 18)

I have to admit, I'm looking forward to the new Indiana Jones movie. It's one of the few series where the sequels don't totally suck because they're just so fun.

Jeff Brandt (Jeff Brandt) said on May. 15, 2008 at 11:36 am:

I would say I'm most anticipating the Batman movie and WALL-E. Hadn't heard about the latter, but it sounds interesting and somewhat experimental, which I respect when it comes from major studios.

Saw the theatrical production of Mama Mia at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis and couldn't stand it, so I'll be missing that (unless I review it).

Also, critics liked Signs? I guess I haven't really read up on that, but I despised it and found it very heavily contrived. I'd definitely put Unbreakable and Sixth Sense above that.

Though Signs had some flaws in the plot, I thought it was still a great movie with some intense imagery.
