Be careful before you eat that. It might not be edible!

That pea-pod looking vegetable is known as the fava bean and unless you eat it while it is very young, it is inedible. How can you tell? You’ll want to eat only the pods that are not bulging with beans, as this is the key indicator of age.

You can also purchase them dried or cooked in cans with the reassurance that someone else has assessed their age and edibility.

You’ll want to remove the fava beans’ tough skin by blanching before you eat these scrumptious veggies. Then feel free to go ahead and cook them as you would other vegetables.

According to http://www.oeanmist.com, a Web site that researches several plants in the legume family, the fava beans has a rich, meaty flavor. They go as far as to say they are the “true stars” of the legume family.

The fava bean is a favorite in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes, but it is also commonly used in soups. Perhaps this could make a great winter treat?

I'm sorry, but the only thing I ever think of when I think of fava beans is Hannibal Lecter.
